ARMIS CHAMPION
by
Elias A./ J Amitenejah

From BLACK:
NARRATOR (V.O)
Nothing is impossible yet no one could believe that a young college student could one day become The
United World Armis Champion. From the very start, the odds she had to face were too great.

FADE IN:
INT. OFFICE - DAY

A lavishly furnished office, the decor fitting to royalty. An elegantly dressed man, JASON WALKER, 47, sits behind a
massive desk. He riffles through a file, selects some print outs. A younger man, BILL, joins him, holds up the folded
newspaper he clutches so Jason glimpses a part of the headline which reads: "CAPITAL PUNISHMENT...
Jason’s phone rings. He hands the print outs to Bill then grabs the phone. Listens for a moment then speaks briefly.

JASON
Show her in. (to Bill) She’s here.
A lady, of diminutive stature, CHLOE, early 20s, enters the office. Jason and Bill rise to greet her. They exchange brief
pleasantries then Jason offers her a chair.

JASON
We are familiar with your husband’s trial. Although it is clear your family suffered a travesty of
justice, the circumstantial evidence coupled with the eye witness accounts, makes it a very
weak case. It will take massive effort to change the results.

CHLOE
It’s a big case it requires someone
who can match its nature. Wilkins,
one of my best professors said you
are the best criminal
defense lawyer in the state and I
really hope you win this case. He
thinks-

JASON
I’d like to do all I can to live up
to your expectations and professor
Wilkins’ praise. I know it’s hard
for you but I need your help to
reconstruct the crime so I can
settle on the best way to approach
the case. Tell us what happened
that night.

FLASH BACK:
INT. PARKING LOT - NIGHT
Partial darkness.
There’s only one vehicle in the parking lot. An old model.
It looks its age.

CHLOE (V.O)
We’d just checked into our hotel
after the wedding. Michael wanted
to take me out-
A couple who hold hands, MICHAEL GOMEZ (20s), and CHLOE, in
a bridal dress, approach the car. They stop abruptly when
they hear:

WOMAN (O.S)
Help me!
In the semi-darkness beyond the car, a woman distinguishable
only by her long hair, struggles against a man in a hood. A
punch connects with her face and she reels towards Michael
and Chloe.
A gloved hand grabs her hair, yanks her back. The
woman twists around, sinks her teeth into the man’s arm
drawing a SHRIEK from her assailant. He whips out a knife,
swings her around as he thrusts the knife forward.
Chloe SCREAMS.
The man spins around to face the couple. He supports the
woman’s body long enough to yank the knife out then
advances.
Michael thrusts Chloe behind him, strikes a defensive
stance.
The man hurls himself at Michael.
Michael tackles him down, and they wrestle for a short
moment on the floor. Michael manages to disarm him.
The man unsheathes another knife, swings it back-
Chloe SCREAMS again.
A man CURSES off-screen then the THUD of approaching
footsteps swells.
Michael’s assailant springs up, pads to a darker part of the
parking lot, blends into the darkness as-
A brilliant beam of light strikes Chloe in the face. It
sweeps past her, rests on Michael who still clutches the
bloody knife.

MAN (O.S)
Call the cops Harry.

CHLOE (V.O)
The security guard...

BACK TO:
INT. OFFICE - DAY
Chloe breaks down. She fumbles with her purse, extracts a
handkerchief.

CHLOE
He said Michael had...had...
Chloe sobs.

JASON
Chloe, I’d like to help and I
really want to but though cases
like these are hard to win, with
the right resources we have a
really good chance of winning. But
I’ve got to tell you there are no
guarantees.
Chloe composes herself, dries her eyes. The shadow of a
smile dances on her lips.

CHLOE
How much will it cost?
JASON
Based on the amount of time it will
take me to complete my legal tasks,
my retainer is $100,000 and-
Jason holds up an envelope.

JASON
Here’s an estimate of the total
cost. In your present condition it
would probably be best to view it
under medical supervision-
Chloe shakes her head, takes the envelope and opens it.
Jason exchanges a glance with Bill.

CHLOE
Five hundred thousand...

JASON
You’ve probably had difficulties
finding an attorney to take this
case. It’s because it’s a difficult
one to battle. Take the time you
need to make a decision. I’m here
if you need us.
Chloe rises, shakes hands with Jason and Bill then trudges
towards the door.

CHLOE (V.O)
Lord help us.

INT. CLINIC- LATER
A small clinic.
The door bursts open and Chloe stumbles in, one hand held over her belly.
An elderly doctor, MISS SMITH, in a white lab coat, who
peruses a book titled, "THE Armis PLAYERS HANDBOOK", looks
up abruptly. She half-rises from her chair when she sees Chloe.

CHLOE
It’s my ulcers again and I ...
Chloe coils up suddenly, clamps a hand over her mouth. She
straightens up after a moment, winces and holds her head in
her hands.

CHLOE
I been feeling queasy all day and
I’ve had this headache...

MISS SMITH
It’s nothing to worry about. Have
you tried feeling this?
Miss Smith, pulls on a pair of surgical gloves, reaches for
Chloe’s bosom.

CHLOE
Owww! Don’t touch that! They’ve
been tender for some time now.
Miss Smith nods, settles back on her chair.

MISS SMITH
I have great news for you Chloe, sit.
Chloe complies.

MISS SMITH
You’re pregnant. And if you don’t want to lose your baby, you’ll have to stop stressing yourself.

CHLOE
I’d like to but...after
unsuccessfully trying to get an
attorney to appeal Michael’s case,
the one who said he can handle it
is asking for the kind of money I
can’t raise.

MISS SMITH
Your husband had many friends. Have
you tried to approach his friends
on wasabi?

CHLOE
Was-what?
Miss Smith scribbles the http://uk.wasabi.com web address on
a sheet of paper, hands it to Chloe.

MISS SMITH
Big social networking site popular
with Armis players. Try reaching
his network or if that will be
hard, you could talk to his Armis
Club Director. I’ll give you his
address if you wish?
Chloe nods.

INT. CHARTER SCHOOL - PRIVATE OFFICE - DAY
A large spacious office. Large GEICO posters line the
walls. On a bulletin board by the door, a flier promoting
the UWAC competition is on display.
The door snaps open and Fay walks in. Proceeds straight to
the center of the room where a man, PHIL, 39, sets up video
equipment. The button on his coat states he is, "Armis CLUB
MANAGER". He nods to acknowledge Chloe’s presence.

PHIL
I’m preparing for a big match.
Phil steps back to survey his handiwork, then turns to
Chloe, extends his hand. They shake.

PHIL
What’s come over you kid? You look
kind of sickish.

CHLOE
I need your help Phil.
Phil guides her across the room, helps her onto a chair.

PHIL
Alright, shoot.
Chloe fumbles with her purse, finds a sheet of paper. Hands
it to Phil.

CHLOE
I need to raise that cash to get
Michael out of prison. I figured
that since he was one of you-uh you
could talk to the club members and-
Chloe’s voice trails off.

PHIL
Have you tried other avenues?
Family, friends, you know?

CHLOE
My parents spent all their savings
on my college fees and my Michael’s
folks are uh- not well-to-do. We go
back a long way Phil, you are the
only one who can help us.

PHIL
Well I could try but it’s
complicated. Club members would be
more willing to assist if they know
the person they’re helping well
enough. The solution is-
Phil opens a drawer, finds an Armis Club registration form
and holds it up.

PHIL
Join the club, make friends and
maybe enter the competition to win
the grand prize. A million green
bucks. I could schedule a few
matches for you so you can qualify
for the United world Armis
competition. Oh wait, can you play?
Chloe smiles, leans back on the chair and closes her eyes.

FLASH BACK:
INT. APARTMENT - EVENING
A moderately furnished apartment.

CHLOE (V.O)
I learned the game from Michael by
the next year during a student
cultural exchange program I’d
become an expert.
Chloe addresses wannabe Armis players who stand around her
in a semi-circle.

CHLOE
Armis is a fast, modern high
strategy war game where wisdom
always wins. The object of the game
is to capture your opponent’s flag.
Chloe demonstrates some moves on an Armis board. Her
audience "oohs" and "ahs".

CHLOE (V.O)
And played against some of the
visiting students who were the
best.
Chloe and a young man, CLAY, 20s, sit at table, Armis board
between them. Armis players cluster around them.

BACK TO:
INT. CHARTER SCHOOL - PRIVATE OFFICE - DAY
Phil listens to Chloe, transfixed.

CHLOE
I beat them every time.
Phil uncaps a pen.

PHIL
Complete your registration, I’ll
slot an early match for you
tomorrow. Win it, you are well on
your way to getting that grand
prize. What would you do with a
million dollars from the Armis
competition?
Chloe tries to speak, fails to. Averts her face to hide the
tears in her eyes.

INT. CHARTER SCHOOL - HALLWAY - EVENING
Deathly quietness reigns.
A door opens. Phil and Chloe step out, proceed down the
hallway.

PHIL
I suggest you familiarize yourself
with this-
Phil grasps Chloe’s arm prompting her to stop. He indicates
a large poster on one wall.
They walk over. The poster shows the various rankings and
qualification levels of the UWAC tournament.

PHIL
It takes a year from championship
to championship but to get there
requires unwavering commitment and
a high level of skill. The person
with the most points at the end of
the qualification period is ranked
the number one competitor. Come on-
They proceed down the hallway.

PHIL
You accrue points by playing
consistently, against fellow club
members and in invitational
competitions to get more points and
win cold hard cash in the process.

CHLOE
How many invitational competitions?

PHIL
Four. The club monthly competition,
the state, regional and national
competitions. You win the last one,
you automatically qualify for the
international tournament. It’s your
big chance to win a million bucks.

CHLOE
But a year...can’t you do something
in the meantime, say like try to
mount a fundraiser to raise the
attorney’s retainer?
They get to the foot of a set of steps leading up.

PHIL
Just concentrate on winning today’s
match. Michael was one of us, the
Club will do all it can to help him
if our sponsors stand by us.
Chloe hugs Phil impulsively. He disentangles himself guides
her up the steps.

NARRATOR (V.O)
Little did Phil know the sort of
resistance he’d encounter.

INT. MEETING ROOM - NIGHT
A medium- sized room, with the furniture arranged in
standard conference facility fashion. There are only two
people in the room, a tall man in a black suit, TURNER, and
a mean-looking stocky man, MARK MOORE, who sit side by side
at a table, eyes glued on a large TFT monitor.
Chloe’s face momentarily fills the screen. A pop-window
obscures her. The text on it reads: "CLICK TO WATCH LIVE ON Armisgame.com"
Turner makes an impatient gesture and Moore reaches for the
mouse, clicks on the link. The screen goes blank as the page
loads then in the video pane- cold open on: the venue of an
Armis game. Chloe and her opponent take their respective chairs.
Footsteps sound then a rap sounds on the door. Both men look up.
The door opens and Phil enters the room.

PHIL
You called me.
Turner nods, shifts his attention back to the game in
progress, and speaks his eyes locked on the screen.

TURNER
You misappropriated club funds. As
club sponsor you owe me and other
prominent club members an
explanation.

PHIL
You were out of town, since it was
an urgent matter I spoke to some
club members. They voted for paying
the attorney’s retainer to help the
Gomez family.

TURNER
You knew my position prior to
making the decision?
Phil shrugs.

PHIL
It was the right thing to do at
that time sir. You are a
philanthropist yourself, I thought
you would understand.

TURNER
Given the publicity the case got,
it would be politically untenable
to associate myself with a
convicted murderer. I ask you to
reconsider your decision of
standing by him.

PHIL
There’s nothing to reconsider sir.
Gomez did nothing wrong.

TURNER
Then you leave me no option but to
rescind my patronage as Club
sponsor.
Phil’s mouth drops agape.

TURNER
But if you change your mind you
know how to reach us.
Phil nods, heads for the door, head bowed and shoulders
slumped.

NARRATOR (V.O)
Phil soon realized he’d made the
best decision in his life as
Chloe’s attorney made massive
progress in court and Chloe buoyed
by that steadily rose in the
rankings with each match she
played. As the months progressed,
Chloe plowed through the
invitational competitions insert:
A clip of successive close up shots of an Armis game in it’s
final stages.

BACK TO:
NARRATOR (V.O)
But at the national competition it
was obvious that there would be a
serious problem soon-

CUT TO:
EXT. DRIVE-WAY - DAY
A car pulls up on the drive-way. Phil alights, helps a very
pregnant Chloe out. She waddles a few steps forward, stops
abruptly and clutches her belly.
Phil darts over, grips her arm to support her.

PHIL
Are you alright?

CHLOE
I guess I am. I think I-I’ll
manage.

PHIL
Are sure? Your health and your
baby’s are more important than...

CHLOE
No! I can’t turn back now. I’m so
close Phil, I’m so close. And...I
owe Michael’s attorney a ton of
cash. This is the only way I can
pay him.
A hand thrusts a microphone in Chloe’s face.

REPORTER (O.S)
We are in the pacific collegiate
school, venue for this year’s
national Armis competition and on
your screen right now is the number
contender for the championship.
Miss-
Phil brushes off the reporter with a ’no comment’, and leads
Chloe, her face a mask of pain, towards a building.

NARRATOR (V.O)
And the world was watching-
INT. FAMILY HOUSE - DAY
A moderately furnished living room. Several photographs of a
graduate grace the walls. The graduate, Clay, in an "Armis
NATIONAL CHAMPION, UK", jacket, slumps on a chair pulls the
laptop on the table closer.
Clay clicks on bookmarks, selects Armisgame.com. The page
loads and he clicks on the Armis competitions link, leans
back on his chair as the page loads. A timer runs backwards:
5 seconds, 2 seconds...
Clay leans closer.

INT. PACIFIC COLLEGIATE SCHOOL - OFFICE - SAME
A woman in an Armis patron cap helps Chloe onto a chair as
her opponent sits at the opposite side side of the table.
The players arrange their Armis game pieces appropriately.
Chloe’s face contorts. She winces, grips the tables edge
abruptly.

ARMIS PATRON
Are you alright lady?
Hyperventilating, Chloe manages a feeble nod. Her mouth
snaps agape suddenly.

CHLOE
Oh no...I think my water just
broke. IARMIS

PATRON
Just hold on we’ll call an
ambulance
(glancing over her shoulder)
Phil!

INT. HOSPITAL - DAY
A private room.

NARRATOR (V.O)
And thus ended her journey to the
championship or so she thought.
With her baby in an incubator and
her husband still in jail, Chloe
was heart-broken but one person
stood by Chloe through the
difficult times.
Chloe an IV tube strapped to her arm, lies motionless in a
bed. She stares at the ceiling, her face blank.
She shifts slightly, turns to face Phil who sits by the bed.

CHLOE
I’m sorry Phil.

PHIL
There’s nothing to apologize for.
It’s life. We win some battles,
lose some but still life goes on.
A shadow falls over Phil. He squints, looks up and gasps.

TURNER (O.S)
And so does your progress. I
rallied a thousand Armis clubs to
demand for a rematch. The
competition’s sponsors agreed to
have the aborted match played
online when your club member is
strong enough. It won’t affect much
because the UWAC is two months
away.

CHLOE
No...it can’t be true.

TURNER
The representatives of Geico, BING
and MSN games all seconded the
proposal. Anytime you are ready-
Tears fill Chloe’s eyes.

NARRATOR (V.O)
So a week later, she played.

INSERT:
A short clip of another Armis game: Close up shots of the
players moving their pieces on Armis board.

NARRATOR (V.O)
And qualified for the United World
Armis Championship.
Close up shot of Chloe capturing her opponents flag.

NARRATOR (V.O)
And got her law degree one month later.

EXT. CAMPUS GROUNDS - DAY
Chloe with other grads, one month kid in her arms, poses for
a photograph.

NARRATOR (V.O)
But with the attorney dawdling with
Michael’s case until he got paid,
Chloe had to make a hard decision-

INT. OFFICE - DAY
A door opens and Chloe enters the office. Proceeds straight
to the end of the room where Jason stoops over several open files.
He looks up from his work, holds out his hand to Chloe.

JASON
Please sit.

CHLOE
I’m here to talk to you about my
husband’s case. Much as I
appreciate what you’ve done so far,
I’d like to take over.

JASON
It’s a tough case to battle, my
experience-

CHLOE
I have the will to win. It will
sustain me. But thanks for
everything.
They shake hands and Chloe exits the office.

NARRATOR (V.O)
Nonetheless, Chloe had one more
thing to do for the person who’d
stood by her through her tough
times.

EXT. CHARTER SCHOOL - NIGHT
The entrance of the Pacific Collegiate School.
A large neon sign with the wording, "THE UNITED WORLD Armis
CHAMPIONSHIP", lights up. Miniature of flags of several
countries indicating the nationalities of the contestants,
are on display below the text.

NARRATOR (V.O)
She had to face the best Armis
players from the world who had

NARRATOR (V.O) (cont’d)
converged here to battle for the
Armis championship. In the end only
the best two were left...to face
off in the grand match.

INT. PACIFIC COLLEGIATE SCHOOL - DAY
A large room. The only furniture in it is a table and two
chairs which are in the middle of the room. A brief case and
an Armis board rest on opposite ends of the table.
Around the table but some distance away, several cameras are
mounted on tripod stands, facing the table.

NARRATOR (V.O)
And it’s at this time that Chloe learned some vital information that had escaped everyone’s notice.

REPORTER (O.S)
This year’s tournament hasn’t been marred with any incident. Last year’s finalist was found murdered
in a parking lot a night before the grand match right in this...here come the contestants!

Clay who dons a miniature flag of the UK on his coat pocket weaves struts into the room followed by
Chloe with her stars and stripes pinned to her Armis National Champion jacket.

NARRATOR (V.O)
The champion would take home a million dollars.

INSERT:
Short video clip of an Armis game: Extreme close up shots of the game at various stages. At the start, close to the end
etc.

BACK TO:
INT. PACIFIC COLLEGIATE SCHOOL - DAY
Clay makes a move, leans back on his chair, smirk on his face.

Chloe counter moves.
The smirk on Clay’s face vanishes.

Clay makes another move. Hesitant.

Chloe counters with a devastating move, captures Clay’s flag. She rises to the applause of an off
screen audience, bows politely then sticks her hand out to Clay. They shake hands.

NARRATOR (V.O)
Buoyed by her victory and armed with the fresh knowledge about her
husband’s case, Chloe was in court the next week. She convinced the
judge to order a fresh investigation to be conducted.
Michael was cleared of the charges, the real murderer arrested and the
Gomez family re-united but all that work had drained Chloe physically-

INT. HOSPITAL - DAY
Dazzling bright light reflects off a pair of large sun glasses. The owner of the glasses, Michael, who dons an
Armis jacket, takes the glasses off, rubs his eyes then approaches the bed on which Chloe lies.
A three month baby, lies by Chloe’s side fast asleep. Michael watches for a moment then creeps closer, kisses the
child then clasps Chloe’s arm. Her eyes flutter open and a smile lights her face up.

CHLOE
Michael...

MICHAEL
You are the best ever Chloe. How can I ever repay you?

CHLOE
It was part of our wedding vows Mike. I missed you. Chloe sits up, places an
arm around Michael’s shoulders draws her closer to him.

CHLOE
We are walking away from the life we lived Michael, we’ll build a great future for
our baby with what I won in the Armis Competition.

Michael tries to speak, fails to and breaks down instead. He
hugs Chloe tighter and as he draws back to kiss her we-

FADE OUT.
